An elderly man has died, and three others were seriously injured after a delivery truck mounted the pavement as it swerved to avoid a collision with an e-scooter rider in central London.

Police are now searching for the suspect who failed to stop following the accident. He is described as a man aged about 30 with dark hair and wearing a black business suit.

The suspect was first sighted in Guilford Street, riding on his e-scooter toward the A4200 junction. He then went across the main road towards Russell Square Gardens, yards in front of a moving lorry.

According to police accounts, the lorry driver attempted to avoid the collision by braking and swerving, but his vehicle was forced to mount the pavement, leaving no time for the pedestrians to escape.

The accident occurred near the Russell Square Gardens in Bloomsbury at 10.10am, closing the A4200 between Euston Station and High Holborn. It is unlikely to reopen fully until tomorrow, causing widespread congestion.

Supt Glenys Willson, head of the Serious Collision Unit, said: “We have spoken to some witnesses and the lorry driver, who is being treated for shock but is otherwise uninjured.”

Willson noted that: “The scooter rider continued towards Montagu Place without stopping,” charging that, “Although [the rider] was wearing headphones, we don’t believe he could have been unaware of the carnage caused by his criminal recklessness.”

Both the suspect and the general public were urged to contact the Unit on 0207 230 1515 with any additional information.
